ImageCountry Summary

Romania is a land rich in agriculture, minerals and oil but plundered, impoverished and polluted under Communism for the benefit of the elite.

Economic liberalisation since 1990 has been slow. Under Communism, manipulation and control of churches was oppressive, with severe persecution for those who refused to submit. A proposed bill on religious freedom contained policies as strict as any in the former Soviet Union, but this was withdrawn. Only 15 religious groups are officially recognized ~ others can only operate as associations. Minority groups find that most persecution comes from the Orthodox Church rather than the government itself. This makes evangelism and church planting very difficult and even more needed. Emphasis is on the south and east of Romania, where there is an insignificant evangelical witness. Ministry to the Romanian youth is also perceived as a key to spiritual renewal of the country.
